PRESS RELEASE
As the first market in the world, Coca-Cola in Sweden is launching PET bottles made from 100 percent recycled plastic* with labels where the brands are left aside and instead give way to the call to pledge again. The new label design for the Swedish market concerns the Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Bonaqua brands and represents a major change from the international standard design.
The distinctive label design is part of a broad sustainability effort to encourage more people to pledge and raise awareness of the importance of collection as a crucial part of enabling a circular economy for plastic packaging. In 2020, Coca-Cola in Sweden will become the first market in the world where all locally produced PET bottles are made from 100 percent recycled plastic.
The labels on Coca-Cola, Fanta, Sprite and Bonaqua will be white and for a period will depart from their characteristic colors to clearly communicate “Pledge again. I am made from 100% recycled plastic. Made in Sweden". The distinctive label design will be available on PET bottles in sizes 0.5 L and 1.5 L.
- We have a responsibility to ensure that none of our packaging ends up as rubbish in nature. The switch to 100 percent recycled plastic is a big step for our business. It feels right that Coca-Cola in Sweden uses the reach and strength of our brands to encourage consumers to reserve the bottle again. Coca-Cola wants to be a positive force in the communities in which we operate, and when we are relevant and reach our consumers, we make a difference together, says Barbara Tönz, CEO of Coca-Cola AB.
Coca-Cola in Sweden works together with customers and partners to encourage the collection and pledge of bottles.
- To achieve a circular economy for packaging, cooperation is required throughout the entire value chain. I am grateful to all actors who show such great commitment to increasing the collection in Sweden. We have a fantastic return system where a majority of all bottles are collected, something that greatly enables our launch. Together, we will work to continue making it easy for consumers to do the right thing. The hope with the initiative is to increase the percentage of collected bottles and to reach 100 percent by 2025. We want all bottles to fit so that they can be turned into new bottles again, says Sofie Eliasson Morsink, CEO of Coca-Cola European Partners Sweden AB.
* Does not refer to the bottle's cap and label, which are made from other recyclable materials that are recycled.
