PRESS RELEASE
This year marks 70 years since Coca-Cola, one of the world's most well-known and loved drinks, made its official debut in Sweden. Today, Coca-Cola is found all over the country, from the local grocery store in Haparanda to cafes in the Skåne countryside, and has an obvious place for both everyday life and parties. It is also 25 years ago that the doors were opened to the production facility located in Jordbro, where over a million liters of beverage are produced every day.
In 1953, the same year that Dag Hammarskjöld became UN Secretary General and the classic Volvo Duett was launched, the first trucks full of Swedish-made Coca-Cola rolled out to all corners of the country and the drink quickly became a great favorite among Swedes who wanted to experience "magic in a bottle”. Since 1998, Coca-Cola in Sweden has had its heart in Jordbro, just south of Stockholm. People from all over the world work at the plant, which today supplies the Swedish people with over 400 million liters of drink annually, and of the more than 700 employees, around 500 are at the plant in Jordbro.
After 70 years as a market leader, the list of news and events over the years can be made long. The packaging has undergone several changes, corks have changed shape and the PET bottles have been made of 100 percent recycled plastic* for a few years now. Coca-Cola has gone from offering only the classics Coca-Cola, Fanta and Sprite to a broad portfolio with various drinks from water and juice to sports drinks. There have also been exciting taste visits, such as Coca-Cola Light Mango, Coca-Cola Zero Sugar Cinnamon and Fanta Dark Mystery.
- We are proud of our history and the fantastic journey that Coca-Cola has made in Sweden. Our drinks are a part of our consumers' lives and a given feature at both Friday evenings and football matches as well as at the beach or lunch. Every year we get to do a lot of fun and important things, everything from working with exciting world artists and festivals to preventing littering in our nature. We are passionate about making a real difference and now we look forward to the next 70 years of product and brand development as well as our commitment to driving development forward in social, economic and ecological sustainability, says Christoph Friedrich, CEO of The Coca-Cola Company in Sweden.
- In 2021, we achieved an important milestone when the production facility in Jordbro was certified as climate neutral for the first time. An important step towards our overall goal of reaching net zero emissions of greenhouse gases in the entire value chain by 2040. But our pursuit of a more sustainable future does not end there, we are also determined to make a positive and lasting difference in society. Now we continue to invest in the future together with the industry, customers and our partners, says Sofie Eliasson Morsink, CEO of Coca-Cola Europacific Partners Sweden.
The drinks from Coca-Cola that are sold in Sweden are manufactured in Jordbro, where production, storage and the Swedish head office are based. The facility has gradually developed over the past two decades with a focus on innovative and sustainable production and is today a modern production facility at the forefront.
Over the years, Coca-Cola in Sweden has worked to have a strong presence in society through various collaborations and with a commitment to several important social issues. Today there are a number of collaborations, for example together with Håll Sverige Rent, the Red Cross and ReDi School. As a large local actor and employer, there has also been a long-term commitment to the local area and a collaboration with both the municipality and other actors to increase security and help especially young people into employment.
Coca-Cola has also always had a close relationship with sports and music culture, which has resulted in artist collaborations with, among others, Anis Don Demina, Theoz and sponsorship of the Melodifestivalen, as well as global sponsorship of the Olympics and FIFA has been strengthened locally through partnerships with the Swedish Football Association, the Swedish Hockey League and the Swedish Padel Federation.
