PRESS RELEASE
The water consumption to produce one liter of Coca-Cola in Sweden decreased by two percent in 2012 compared to the previous year. The reduction is part of a larger project that Coca-Cola Enterprises Sweden is carrying out, where the climate footprint in the entire value chain is to be reduced by a third.
Between 2011 and 2012, water consumption decreased by two percent to produce one liter of Coca-Cola in Sweden, from 1.90 liters to 1.86 liters. The goal for 2012 was to reduce by three percent. The long-term goal is to get down to 1.2 liters of water per liter of Coca-Cola by the year 2020. The interim goal for next year is 1.5 liters.
- To reduce water consumption, we have, among other things, made our cleaning and washing up more efficient, which saves both water and chemicals. Many areas in the world are water-stressed and we therefore work hard to develop innovations and smart solutions, both in Sweden and internationally, says Peter Bodor, information director at Coca-Cola Enterprises in Sweden.
A large part of water use is used in the production process such as cleaning and rinsing. As of this year, a so-called PH basin is also used at production in Haninge, where the PH value in the water is equalized before it is released into the sewer.
- Our overall sustainability goal is to reduce the climate footprint of the drink in the consumer's hand by a third. We want to take responsibility for sustainable development that extends beyond our own operations and take an industry-leading role for sustainable development, says Peter Bodor.
In collaboration with Haninge municipality in 2012, a vulnerability analysis was made for the local water source. No risks were identified and the collaboration continues to continuously ensure water quality and accountability. It is this spring water that then becomes Bonaqua.
Coca-Cola Enterprises was one of the first companies to meet the standard for certification by the Carbon Trust Water Standard, an independent international institute that certifies companies on an annual basis that measure and reduce their water consumption.
