PRESS RELEASE
Coca-Cola in Sweden is now showing the next generation PET bottle, made from 100% recyclable plant material, for the first time in Sweden. The prototype that The Coca-Cola Company has developed together with the biotechnology company Virent has been named PlantBottle. The new bottle can be found on the Rhubarb Garden's balcony, under Nordic Gardens at the Stockholm Fair between April 21-24.
PlantBottle is manufactured using a patented technology that converts natural sugar from plants but is also 100% recyclable. Since 2010, Coca-Cola in Sweden has been using bottles that consist of recycled plastic, new plastic and up to 30% plant-based material.
- The 100% PlantBottle was created on a small scale for the Expo fair in Milan at the end of last year to show that this technology is possible. It will take longer to create the infrastructure and production required to fully bring the technology to market. Such innovations are necessary for Sweden to reach its climate goals, but also for us in business, which is dependent on plastic, to achieve our ambitious goals to reduce emissions, says Rönnaug Vinje, head of sustainability at Coca-Cola Enterprises Sweden.
Back in 2009, The Coca-Cola Company launched the PlantBottle project with a bottle made from up to 30% plant-based material. Since then, it has manufactured and distributed over 35 billion bottles in almost 40 countries, including Sweden.
