PRESS RELEASE
Today, Coca-Cola in Sweden announces that Coca-Cola life will be available in Sweden later this year. Sweden thus becomes one of the first two countries to launch the product in Europe. This reduced-calorie cola drink contains one-third less sugar and one-third fewer calories than regular cola, and the sweetness comes from natural sources.
Sweetened with a mixture of sugar and stevia extract, a 33 cl can of Coca-Cola life contains 89 calories and will join Coca-Cola®, Coca-Cola light®, and Coca-Cola zero® on store shelves from September. Coca-Cola life is the first innovation within Coca-Cola to be launched in Sweden since Coca-Cola zero in 2007.
Coca-Cola life and the sweetener - stevia extract - represent the latest in sweetener innovation. Stevia extract comes from the stevia plant that grows in South America.
Coca-Cola in Sweden also uses stevia extract as a sweetener in Glaceau vitaminwater.
The launch of Coca-Cola life is part of the company's global commitment in health and wellness, to offer consumers more options with fewer or no calories. During the last 12 months, Coca-Cola in Sweden has reduced the calorie content of Glaceau vitaminwater by reducing the amount of sugar and introducing stevia extract; launched smaller packaging sizes of Coca-Cola and recently announced that the company will get 120,000 Swedes more active by 2020, mainly through swimming.
A quarter of the cola drinks sold by Coca-Cola in Sweden are already low-calorie alternatives, and the launch of Coca-Cola life gives consumers even greater choice within the portfolio: Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola life with a third fewer calories1 and two calorie-free alternatives with Coca-Cola zero and Coca-Cola light.
Coca-Cola life will be manufactured in Sweden by Coca-Cola Enterprises Sweden in Jordbro outside Stockholm.
- We are happy to be able to add Coca-Cola life to our portfolio of Coca-Cola in Sweden. It complements our existing brands and is well positioned to meet changing lifestyle trends and provide people with a tasty cola drink with fewer calories and sweetness from natural sources, says Pierre Decroix, CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises Sweden.
Coca-Cola life will be available in 33 centiliter cans and in 0.5 and 1.5 liter PET bottles. The packaging bottle for Coca-Cola life 0.5 liter is a Plantbottle, which is made of plastic from plant material up to 22.5 percent and approximately 25 percent recycled plastic.
Footnote 1: The amount of calories is a third lower compared to other sugary cola products in Sweden. Thanks to the use of stevia extract, the amount of sugar is reduced by 35 percent.
