PRESS RELEASE
In line with the EU's single-use plastics directive, which comes into force in 2024, and as an important part of the beverage company's quest for a litter-free world under the World Without Waste strategy, Coca-Cola will introduce the transition to fixed caps on PET bottles as early as autumn 2022. The new design means that the cap remains attached to the bottle even after opening. The change facilitates collection and recycling of the entire packaging and helps prevent littering, which contributes to our work together with the industry towards 100 percent recycling of both bottle and cork.
STOCKHOLM, 12 October 2022: During October, Coca-Cola in Sweden will introduce new fixed caps on PET bottles to increase the collection and recycling of the entire packaging, as part of the new EU directive on single-use plastics that will come into force in July 2024. The change , which will be carried out on all PET bottles in the range, will be initiated in the fall of 2022 and is planned to be ready by 2023 at the latest. The first will be Fanta, Coca-Cola, Sprite and bonaqua.
- This is a small change that we hope will have a positive impact on the environment. We have already switched to using 100 percent recycled plastic in our PET bottles. The new corks are the next step under our World Without Waste strategy, and an important part of a larger journey of change where we eventually hope to achieve our vision of a litter-free world, says Charlotte Kalin, sustainability manager at The Coca-Cola Company in Sweden.
For several years now, all bottles and caps from Coca-Cola in Sweden have been 100 percent recyclable. Most Swedes are already good at pawning their packages with the cork screwed on, and with the new cork design, even fewer corks will be lost, thrown away or forgotten in nature before they are pawned together with the bottle.
- We are happy that we are working together within the EU to reduce littering of nature and seas. Reducing plastic waste is crucial if we are to be able to meet our environmental goals and transition to a more circular economy. We see the fact that Coca-Cola in Sweden is already changing to increase the collection and recycling of their packaging as very positive, says Johanna Ragnartz, CEO of Håll Sverige Rent
The new caps are an important milestone in achieving a circular economy for packaging, where every bottle – along with every cap – is collected and recycled. This is something that in turn reduces the packaging's climate footprint and prevents any packaging from becoming litter in nature. Coca-Cola has an overall strategy towards World Without Waste, with a vision of a litter-free world and together with the industry, the company strives towards 100 percent recycling of both bottle and cork by 2030 at the latest.
