PRESS RELEASE
Coca-Cola is now introducing its PlantBottle, a fully recyclable PET bottle partially made from plant material, on Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola light and Coca-Cola Zero. It is an important step for Coca-Cola, which works actively to reduce its environmental impact in all stages of its operations, from beverage production to packaging solutions and transport. The goal is to develop a PET plastic bottle that is made from 100 percent plant-based waste.
- We received an incredibly positive response when we launched PlantBottle at Bonaqua silver last autumn. The fact that we are now switching to PlantBottle in our largest beverage categories is definitely a step forward in our investment to reduce our climate impact and our dependence on oil-based materials, says Göran Holm, CEO of Coca-Cola Enterprises Sweden AB.
PlantBottle consists of 22.5 percent plastic made from the plant material molasses, a residual product from sugar production. PlantBottle is a packaging solution that generates a smaller CO2 footprint and is a step away from the use of oil-based plastics. It is 100 percent recyclable, approved in the Swedish deposit system and handled by the stores' usual return stations.
Coca-Cola launched PlantBottle on the Swedish market last fall, then on their Bonaqua silver spring water. The implementation of the new bottle went beyond expectations, among other things, Coca-Cola was awarded the Recycling Industries Inspiration Award 2010.
Since the global launch of PlantBottle in December 2009, 2.5 billion bottles have been put on the market in nine countries. In 2011, Coca-Cola globally expects to double its volume, with the goal of using PlantBottle for all PET packaging by 2020. The long-term vision is to develop recyclable plastic bottles that are only made from 100 percent plant-based waste.
Coca-Cola works actively all over the world to contribute to a reduced environmental impact, primarily in climate, water and packaging. Coca-Cola in Sweden has set climate targets to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 80 percent by 2020 (base year 2004). So far, emissions have been reduced by 25 percent.
PlantBottle will be available in stores from June this year on pint packs for Coca-Cola, Coca-Cola light and Coca-Cola zero.
