PRESS RELEASE
Comments from Coca-Cola on the occasion of KI's report on the link between soft drinks and pancreatic cancer.
Background: On November 8, 2006, a report from the Karolinska Institutet was published. The report's conclusion is that high consumption of sweet foods increases the risk of developing pancreatic cancer.
- We believe that it is important to have a holistic perspective when talking about the causes of pancreatic cancer. The entire person's lifestyle with diet, exercise, stress and alcohol habits should be weighed into the analysis. Focusing only on one substance, in this case sugar, gives a limited picture of reality.
- According to the report, those who drink the most soft drinks are also the ones who smoke and are the most overweight. How do you know that pancreatic cancer is not caused by these other factors?
- Coca-Cola has no self-interest in selling sugar-sweetened soft drinks. We work to offer a wide range of drinks that our consumers demand.
Almost all of our products are available as sugar-free alternatives, which is also the fastest growing category alongside water. It is also within this category that we invest the most and also develop the most new flavors. Many new products now only come in a sugar-free version.
- We believe that sugar-sweetened soft drinks, just like juice and other sugar-sweetened foods, have their place in a healthy lifestyle where there is a good balance between diet and exercise.
