Pepsi
PepsiCo
Pepsi-Cola, is a carbonated soft drink produced by Pepsico.
The drink began to be manufactured in the United States in the early 1890s by pharmacist Caleb Bradham in North Carolina to be used against stomach aches. In 1893 the product was launched as "Brad's drink" and in 1898 it changed its name to "Pepsi-Cola", and with this started one of the world's most successful stories of a consumer product. The name Pepsi comes from dyspepsia.
During the 50s, Pepsi wanted to get rid of its image as the cheap "kitchen cola". Then a new advertising campaign was launched with the message: "Be sociable. Have a Pepsi".
In 1963, "The Pepsi Generation" was launched in the commercials, and Pepsi thereby became the first product to be identified to such a large extent with the attitudes and lifestyles of its consumers rather than its own product characteristics. The same year, 1963, Pepsi released Patio Diet Coke. In 1964, the PepsiCo dropped the confusing brand clash, and Patio Diet Cola became now known as Diet Pepsi.
In 1975, "The Pepsi Challenge" was launched, one of the most successful marketing campaigns in history. Through blind tests in restaurants and stores, it was demonstrated that Pepsi was the cola that the consumer liked best.
In 1984, Pepsi returned to the "Generational communication" of the 60s. A new generation was now emerging and through commercials with Michael Jackson, Pepsi became "The Choice of a New Generation".
In the mid-80s and early 90s, Pepsi continued to use superstars from film and music in its commercials. Artists and celebrities such as Madonna, Cindy Crawford, Tina Turner, Michael J. Fox, Lionel Richie and Shaquille O'Neal have all been Pepsi stars.
In 1997 came a new commercial with the "Generational communication" where the new generation would be attracted to Pepsi by the Spice Girls and the "GeneratioNext" films.
In 1998, Pepsi had its 100th Anniversary - based on when "Pepsi-Cola" was founded.
In June 1, 2007, Diet Pepsi MAX was introduced in the United States, and later in Canada (March 2008). "Diet" was dropped from the name in early 2009. Pepsi MAX is a zero-calorie, sugar-free cola.
In June 29, 2015, PepsiCo announced several product changes which, among other changes, announced that Pepsi MAX would be renamed in North America as Pepsi Zero Sugar. In international markets, PepsiCo still uses the Pepsi MAX name.
In 2023, Pepsi had its 125th Anniversary - with a new logo and visual identity, marking the iconic brands next era.
Pepsi Light (Diet Pepsi), Pepsi MAX and Pepsi Zero Sugar are PepsiCo's main products of sugar free cola soft drinks.
